Analysis – Main Message

Say what you think the author is trying to do or say. What is the author's main message or purpose? Say how well you think the author succeeds in what he or she is attempting and give reasons for your answer.

It's not so easy to tell what the author tried to say. I wonder what Mark Haddon had in mind when he wrote this book. The idea of a teenage boy investing a murder of a poodle, it sounds unbelievably funny. The writing style he uses to emphasize a young boy's writing style is pretty entertaining and authentic.
Except that the given circumstances make the basis of this book very fascinating, I think that the story has a very common and unsurprising plot; you get to know a young boy that tries to find out about things that he isn't allowed to investigate. Through the story he experiences a lot of different emotions and conflicts but in the end, everything will be alright and because he is still so young, he learned some big lessons for the rest of his life.

In my opinion Mark Haddon succeeded very well to build a story about a boy with the asperger's syndrome. He added additional classic themes out of a family's daily life and created a «nice-if-you've-read-it-book». But I think it's also important to say that I expected a little more about the promising basis and the possible outcomes this story could've taken.

Recount – The Story

In your own words what has happened in the book? At any point in the story, retell the major details of the story's plot so far.  The story begins with Christopher discovering Wellington‘s body. Because he likes dogs, he decides to find out who killed him and to write a book about it. To be a good detective, Chrisopher needs to grow far beyond his borders, the borders he has because of his aspergers syndrome. But it’s not only his own that Christopher crosses because in telling white lies and doing things his father forbid him to to, they get into a lot of fights with each other and their relationship starts falling apart more and more. And while investigating his case, Christopher comes across a lot more than just Wellingtons murderer, which is by the way his own father. He finds out that his presumed dead mother was still alive but she she ran away with Mr. Shears, the neighbour she had an affair with. She tried to contact Christopher many times in the past, but his father...

Empathy – 5 Questions asked to: Ed Boone

Write down 5 questions you would like to ask a character. Say why you would like to ask these questions. I'd like to ask Ed Boone 5 questions. Question 1: How and when did you find out that Christopher has the Asperger’s Syndrome? I’d like to ask him this question because I assume that in the first few years of your child’s life you wouldn’t realise that there is something wrong. I wonder when and which signs they detected first. Question 2: Do you think Christopher’s disability had something to do with your marriage not going so well? Only watching from the sidelines it is very hard to estimate how difficult it might be for parents and their own relationship to have a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, especially if the child can’t show you it’s love the way other children would. Question 3: Do you wish Christopher would show you more often that he loves you? I think I already know his answer, however as a reader you don’t get to know much about about E...

Characterization – Relationship Ed and Chris Boone

Write about the relationship between two characters and how it is changing or developing.  What are the characteristics of the relationship? What does it work or not work? What is changing? How do they effect one another? The relationship between Chrisopher and Ed Boone. I’d read further in my book and found out a lot of new information. My guess about the storyline of the book is confirmed – that it is about much more than just finding out who killed Wellington. After Judy’s alleged death Christopher and Ed had a rough but profound relationship and were used to one another. Ed had known his son well and Christopher believed he’d known his father. But Christopher’s investigation led him into a situation that he shouldn’t have gotten himself into.  Christopher is anyway having a hard time putting trust into people. But after he found out that his mother had still been alive (and left them) and his father had killed Wellington, he felt like the world was cras...
